The IPhone Goddess

Posted by: heniii

Remember glamorous Rebecca Bloomwood the self-confessed shopaholic and Samantha Sweeting, the top lawyer lady of the book the Undomestic Goddess? Both of them are famous characters drawn to life by one of the world’s best author: Sophie Kinsella.

Now that the work industry has transformed into a field where men and women are now equal, the most basic gadget to rave about are mobile phones and all the fabulous, glamorous and splendid accessories that come with them.

Remember those boring days you sit in your office chair, dreadful about the upcoming meetings and memos reminding you to call a hundred or so business people all at once. You avidly wait for the time when you can finally go home and get a good night's sleep and start all over again. Then the next morning you find that the day would be the same dull and monotonously toxic day that you’ve been having ever since you started working. You itch for weekends to come by so you could have more color in life. Finally when you find the time to go out you see young lovely girls looking glam and pretty wearing the latest dresses, the latest bags, and even the latest iphone accessories? And you can’t help but look at your everyday boring slacks-and-a-blouse-and-blazer that was almost a uniform and your naked iPhone. It’s just criminal. Fashion is not just about clothes and bags and shoes. Nor just about jewelries and other bling blings. Bring life to yourself. If you’re stuck with your uniform, why not start with your personal necessities like your very own iphone? Splurge on the up-to-the-minute iphone accessories.

Summary

Lara has always had an overactive imagination. Now she wonders if she is losing her mind. Normal twenty-something girls just don't get visited by ghosts! But inexplicably, the spirit of Lara's great aunt Sadie - in the form of a bold, demanding Charleston-dancing girl - has appeared to make one last request: Lara must track down a missing necklace Sadie simply can't rest without. Lara's got enough problems of her own. Her start-up company is floundering, her best friend and business partner has run off to Goa, and she's just been dumped by the love of her life. But as Lara spends time with Sadie, life becomes more glamorous and their treasure hunt turns into something intriguing and romantic. Could Sadie's ghost be the answer to Lara's problems and can two girls from different times end up learning something special from each other?

This book would certainly have a film adaptation just like Confessions of a Shopaholic. I just can smell it.
I've purchased this book even though I was flat broke because I felt so bad about my non existent career. So I decided a good book and a beauty sleep would uplift my spirits. And this is surely a GREAT BOOK. I never did have that beauty sleep because I was too absorbed reading from page 1 till the end when I realized the sun is already making it's wake up call of "rise and shine". I like Sadie's party-girl spirits and Lara's determination in life. And how they learned lessons from each other and well, just read the book, you won't be disappointed.=D

Summary from the Author

Twenty-nine year old Samantha Sweeting is a lawyer in London who makes a huge mistake that costs her a chance to be partner in her firm. In the stress, she ends up applying to be a housekeeper even though she doesn't know how to cook and clean. She gets the job, then must work to pull her life together.

One thing is for sure, each Kinsella novel is very much worth every penny.=D To those who wants a more detailed summary, here's what I can recall (mind you, it's been two years since I've read it. A friend borrowed the book, and as expected, they were never returned.it's that good):

The Undomestic Goddess is Samantha Sweeting. She is a lawyer in a top law firm who's made a fiasco of her career and wind up in front of a humongous house and was mistaken for a housekeeper applicant. Dazed, she was ushered in as a servant to a kind and bloody rich couple who are absolutely delighted by her "curtsy" and her "marvelous laundry". Of course, she knows as much about house chores as a tabby cat does--which is absolutely zero to speak of. How she was able to pull of such stunt and put her life back into pieces, she also realized what is truly important to her--even if the entire world may be against it.

I like Samantha's character more than Rebecca Bloomwood of the Shopaholic Series. (I love Becky too, but Sam's really cool). Samantha is a gutsy, self-driven lawyer climbing up her career ladder, living life to the fullest. And then finds love outside the corporate world.

I absolutely love this book especially for light reading-- those moments when you're stuck at home and it's raining and you just curl up in the bed or on the couch and read a wonderfully crazy book while sipping hot chocolate, or maybe after a stressful week at school as a way of pampering your mind and spirits. :D

My rating: a book worth buying...pronto!=D

Nice-to-know:
Sophie Kinsella is a pseudonym used by Madeleine Wickham to write chick lit. Although Wickham has published other books under her real name, her Kinsella books are much more popular, so more people know who "Sophie Kinsella" is. Here are all the books published by this author, with a note as to whether they were written as Wickham or Kinsella. (source: about.com)
